Kindergarten Reflection
I recently attended a PD session focused on student agency, which has been a major district goal lately. As a coach, I’m always looking for ways to help teachers shift the heavy lifting to the students so they can truly be the boss of their own learning.
A big takeaway for me was that agency has to start with reflection. If students aren't part of that process from day one, they can't really own their progress.
On-Demand & Reflection: After they finish writing, students use a reflection sheet to look back at their work. They identify what they feel good about and where they might be on the rubrics.
The Goal Setting & Reflection Conference: The teacher sits down with each student to compare their self-reflection with the teacher's notes/feedback. They use that On-Demand piece as a shared tool to decide on the actual goals for the unit.
It’s a small change, but it's really about teaching them how to be reflective throughout the learning journey so they can actually own their growth.
